GORDO IMAGES AND TRIBUTES

JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN

TRIBUTES

Everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Gus Arriola has only good things to say about him. I happily include myself in that category, as it was my distinct honor to spend an hour with him in his favorite watering hole, The Carmel Coffee House.

David Domeniconi writes, “Many thanks for the Gordo website.  What a great treasure.  Being from San Francisco,  I grew up with Gordo.  Through my wife, who was the director of the Carmel Art Association,  I got to know Gus when we lived in Carmel in the 80s and 90s.  He was a great supporter of my own illustrated column which ran in the Carmel Pine Cone.  We were lucky enough to get a tour of his studio.  A more kind and gracious man you will not meet  His work with brush and ink were unsurpassed.  Although I envy his skills I don’t envy the load of producing a strip every day plus the Sunday edition. I’m pouring over the website and just in awe of the work.  Thanks again.”

Gus Arriola July 23, 1917 – February 2, 2008

Gus Arriola was born in Florence, Arizona and moved with his family to Los Angeles, California when he was nine years old. He went to work for MGM Studios animation department in 1937 where he met his future wife, Mary Frances Sevier. They were married on January 16, 1943. GORDO is first published on Monday, November 24. 1941. Son Carlin is born January 23, 1946. The family moves from Culver City to La Jolla to Phoenix and, in 1956, to Carmel, California where Gus Arriola continues to produce GORDO until his retirement on March 1, 1985.

Internet protocol says it is proper to list the web link instead of reprinting the information. To that end, we have two sections – one for the work of Gus Arriola while he was still alive and a second for notices after his passing.

These links are culled from the various search engines. Please let me know if there are any links that should be included or updated at Jim@MustBeGuida.com Thank you.
