Gus Arriola loved showcasing the holidays in his strips, including New Year’s Eve and the eternally inebriated earthworms, Porfiro and Panchito, Valentine’s Day, the US Independence Day on July 4th, re-enactment of the Mexican War of Independence, and especially the Mexican holiday “Dia de las Muertas” – Day of the Dead – wherein families would celebrate their departed loved ones (see the move COCO for a wonderful example of this.)
And clearly Gus Arriola loved depicting the Christmas holiday traditions of Mexico via Gordo Lopez and family.
